Tips for Effective BMW Maintenance

When you purchase a BMW, you’re buying a high-performance vehicle, and you probably want it to stay that way. But how do you do that? Sometimes, effective car maintenance can seem like a mystery, and only mechanics and dealerships know the answers to them. Luckily, once you know what you need to do, taking care of your BMW is pretty straightforward.

Let’s demystify caring for your BMW so you can help it stay at peak performance levels for as long as possible.

Which BMW Parts Need Regular Maintenance?

Like any other car, a BMW needs regular oil changes and other common forms of maintenance. Your owner’s manual should be the first place you go to check the recommended maintenance schedule for your specific vehicle.

Generally speaking, your BMW should be professionally inspected at a certified service center every 5,000 miles. Here’s a basic outline of the regular maintenance tasks your BMW needs to run well:

  • Every 5,000 miles (or two to three times per year), it needs:
  • Vehicle inspection
  • Engine inspection
  • Engine oil check
  • Tire rotation, if needed
  • Front and rear brake inspection
  • Brake fluid check Which BMW Parts Need Regular Maintenance?
  • Coolant check
  • Cabin air filter inspection
  • Wiper blade inspection
  • Every 10,000 miles (or once annually), you should have your engine oil, oil filter, and coolant replaced.
  • Every 20,000 miles (or every two years), you should have your fuel filters inspected and replaced.
  • Every 30,000 miles (or every three years), you should replace the following:
  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid, if you have a manual (stick shift) BMW vehicle
  • Every 60,000 miles (or every six years), your BMW needs:
  • Spark plug and engine air filter replacements
  • Brake pad and brake rotor inspections and replacements, if needed
  • Every 90,000 miles (or every nine years), your BMW needs its timing belts and hoses replaced.

What Happens if You Don’t Maintain Your BMW?

Find Your BMW Service Center in South Florida If you don’t keep up with your BMW maintenance, your car will deteriorate over time. For example, if you don’t have your brake fluid checked and occasionally replaced, it will absorb moisture and the impurities within that moisture. Then it will become contaminated and have a harder time helping your brakes work properly. Similarly, if you never have your cabin air filters changed, they’ll fill up with dirt and dust and make it harder for you and your passengers to breathe safely as you drive around.

Luckily, keeping up with BMW maintenance is easy thanks to onboard diagnostic reminders in modern vehicles.

Overall, when you prioritize your BMW’s maintenance, you’re prioritizing your own safety as well as your car’s performance.
